The History of Morningside
Morningside is located between Biscayne Blvd and Biscayne Bay , between 50Terrace and 60th Street. Morningside boast the largest park in Miami. In fact, Morningside is a gated community of approximately 500 homes with a wonderful collection of homes built in the 1920's and 1930's overlooking lush tropical gardens blocks from the bay.
'Morningside was designated Miami's first historic home district by the Miami City Commission in December 1984. In 1992, the U.S. Department of the Interior added the 'Bay Share Historic District' to the National Register of Historic Places. Platted in the early 1920's by James Nunnally, a candy baron from Atlanta who founded the Bay Shore Investment Co... Before the first house was sold, Nunnaly planted 4,000 trees to guarantee a lush environment and a sense of place. .. He also insisted that the only building materials be rock, stucco or brick. He was part and parcel of Miami's great building boom that saw, in1925 alone, Miami's Freedom Tower, Coral Gables' Biltmore Hotel, Trinity Episcopal Catherdral and Hialeah Race Track open.

Among the early dignitaries in Morningside were Miami Mayor Perrine Palmer, who lived at 5928 NE 6th Ct; city manager Frank Wharton, 550 NE 59 St; Mayor Leonard Thompson, 546 NE 57 St,;Cushman School founder Laura Cushman, 589 NE 57 st; thoroughbred breeder Tilyou Christopher, 5945 N Bayshore Dr, and Sidney Meyer, who founded Wometco with Col. Mitchell Wolfson at 5600 NE 6th Ave,
Morningside is not only a special place for its residents, but for all of Miami-Dade County. To share and celebrate the history and unique architecture of this extraordinary neighborhood one should attend the annual Morningside Historical Walking tour held in March. Next year will mark the 21st annual Historic Home Tour! This is a unique opportunity to enter and view the featured historical homes - truly a treat.
